I couldn’t put this book down.
Maybe it’s the historical fiction aspect. Maybe because it’s set in London. Maybe it’s the apothecary itself. All those shiny bottles filled with poisons and elixirs.
This book follows multiple viewpoints and two separate timelines. It is expertly laid out with different voices for each narrating character. That made it very easy to follow for me, one who can get easily mixed up with multiple voices.
The pacing was very good. The end of each chapter leaves you hanging and wanting to see what happens next. The conflict was good. Character development was deep and relatable. James is stupid. Plain and simple. Hahaha.
The coolest thing is the recipes at the back! I read this on kindle but I loved it so much I’m going to buy a hardback copy of it.
CW: infidelity, murder, possible rape, grooming. However, none of these are overly explicit. Just enough to get the point across.
